Descending into the treacherous environment of the Edgelands, Corben's journey leads him to the core of the planet, and the key to it's very existence.

"In the center of this vast open space, a large geodesic sphere hummed at what Corben felt to be the very center of the planet. The vine structure of vessels had branched out again to surround the sphere in a web of glowing capillaries. As Corben neared it, he noted that individual fluid-filled compartments-some brightly lit and others dim or completely dark-made up its curved surface. Within each compartment floated a single life form, encased in it's own biomechanical pod. It appeared to be an enormous hive."

After reviewing his limited options, Corben manages to successfully revive an occupant in one of the pods. It too, like the rest of the planet, is in failing health. The pair quickly discover they have an enemy in common - the despised Shoal - and how the aggressive imperialists have used Corben to infiltrate and infect the planet.
