Corben learns of the Edgelands, a violent place where the planet seems to be literally disintegrating more and more each day. It is here, he surmises, that he might find a way off of the planet. Against Maitz's better judgement, Corben journeys to the Edgelands to discover a chilling scene.

"A powerful gust of wind blew the shroud of dust away and Corben suddenly found himself standing on the edge of the world. He understood Maitz's reluctance at last. The dark shadows turned out to be large slabs of rock-some weighing several thousands of tons-literally cracking off the edge of the planet's surface to float in all directions, ominously filling the sky with debris. Corben had never seen a sight so frightening, yet magnificent at the same time."

"He looked down to see that an enormous cavity had been gouged out of the planet, as though by the hand of God. Across the horizon, a giant chasm stretched out for miles. Beneath him for as far as he could see, gigantic slabs of rock floated upward in an incredible display. Across the sky's distant canopy, flashes crackled as the slabs hit the planet's protective barrier. It was the first time Corben was aware of the shield since it almost killed him upon his arrival."
