Crash landing on the planet's surface, the ship bellies in and bursts apart upon impact, skidding to a steaming, crumpled heap on the planet's surface. Corben has survived, but just barely. Upon awakening, he discovers that he has been nursed back to health. The creature responsible leads him across the surreal terrain of the diseased planet. Eventually, they encounter a series of imposing images sculpted into the landscape, the first traces of civilization.

"The creature scurried to the nearest totem and climbed toward the top. Corben flinched as it shrieked loudly into one of the face's open mouths. Echoes reverberated within, and Corben also felt them through the ground. With a low rumbling, the stone totem separated, its individual parts floating in the air to reveal an open underground passageway."
